The company was originally established in
1898 by Maurice and Nathen Gluckman as Gluckman Brothers Livestock
Auctioneers. Success in the country towns led to a move to
the Johannesburg Market in the early 1900’s, where their
well-established contacts with livestock sellers around the
country and ability to supply fluctuating demand paid handsome
dividends.
It was during this period that Maurice’s son Gerry,
joined the company as a young man and enthusiastically set
out to learn the ropes.
It was not long before Gerry took over the running of the growing
business from his father and successfully steered the company
through various paths of diversification, including a number
of partnerships, all of which served to expand its influence
and area of operation.
Gerry Gluckman served in various capacities including
as a member of the South African Meat Board for seven years
and Chairman of the of the Livestock Auctioneers Association
for twenty years.
He was also voted Agricultural Man of the Year in 1982.
The Gluckman family share the same ethos and beliefs on how business should be conducted and this gives Gluckman Family Trading a competitive edge. The Gluckman’s have a strong commitment to building lasting relationships with customers and suppliers as they know that they are building for the future
During the early 1970’s, Gerry’s son David,
followed family tradition by joining the family business
on completion of his university degree.
David brought change, prosperity and great leadership to the company. With Gerry’s reputation and David’s remarkable business acumen, this team was a winning combination.
David is a trader who maintains and cherishes all existing clients and also sources new business.
The subsequent injection of David’s youthful enthusiasm
and energy balanced by Gerry’s extensive experience, ensured
the continued growth and successful diversification of the business
to include divisions dealing
in poultry and imported boxed meats.
Gluckman Family Trading changed, grew & prospered with the times.
In 2008 Jerome Gluckman, David's son, joined the team. With his youth and vibrant ideas he contributes a fresh perspective of the company. Jerome has spent time training with Gluckman Trading’s valued suppliers in South America.
Jerome has a Bachelor of Commerce degree in Entrepreneurial Management.
